After much excited anticipation, the City of Sterling, Illinois is the newest city to launch their city’s mobile app and become a part of the MyCivic Apps family.
Located in Whiteside County, Sterling has a population of 15,370. Formerly nicknamed “Hardware Capital of the World,” Sterling has a long, proud history in manufacturing and the steel industry. The land in and around Sterling is mostly flat and boasts some of the most fertile farmland in all the world.
Citizens of Sterling now have immediate access to all of the information they could ever want or need about their city – in the palm of their hand. Access to city departments, city services, news, calendar and parks and recreation is just a few clicks away. The city has expressed that they are perhaps most excited about the app’s capabilities for code enforcement duties. Residents can lodge complaints and report issues via the app, and then follow the process through to resolution without having to ever call or visit city hall. The app contains a GPS feature that can be used to pinpoint the location and there is the option to include photographs. For example, if a resident sees graffiti they would like to see cleaned up, the features of the app will show staff exactly where it is and attach a photo of the problem area. The citizen will then receive a reply and will know what action is being taken – they can view the progress on the app and won’t have to call in repeatedly, making staff’s jobs easier and reducing the resident’s frustration at the same time.
The city can now send push notifications to residents, alerting them of emergency situations or issuing reminders of road work that could be an inconvenience. Live feeds from social media sites like Facebook and Twitter are linked with the app and there is also a directory for dining, shopping, and local businesses.
